Trading Journal
How do I create a trading journal in Excel?
To create a trading journal in Excel, start by creating columns for the date, symbol, trade direction, entry price, exit price, position size, fees, P&L, R-multiple, setup, and trading notes. These fields give you enough information to review both your results and the decisions behind each trade.
Keep the first row visible when scrolling and use consistent number formatting for prices and financial results. You can then use formulas to calculate your profit or loss automatically. For a basic long trade, one possible formula is:
=(Exit-Entry)*Size-Fees
After entering enough trades, create a summary section for metrics such as win rate, profit factor, average R, total P&L, and number of trades.
Excel works well for a basic trading journal because the structure is easy to change. Once you know which information matters to you, you can use the same fields in a dedicated trading journal or analytics platform.
